A Christian authorized rights group is opposing strikes by European lawmakers that might enable girls to journey to a different nation on the continent to acquire abortions underneath a “My Voice My Choice” (MVMC) initiative.

The MVMC initiative was submitted to the European Fee on Sept. 1, 2025, after receiving 1,124,513 verified statements of assist. The European Parliament then held a public listening to and, on Dec. 17, voted in favor of the measure, with 358 in favor, 202 towards, and 79 abstentions.

The European Parliament subsequently invited the European Fee to contemplate an opt-in monetary mechanism, supported by EU funding, to assist finance and facilitate cross-border entry to abortion in accordance with the home legal guidelines of collaborating member states.

Greater than 170 civil society organizations from all 27 European Union (EU) member states have despatched a joint letter to the European Fee calling for a constructive and decisive response to the plan geared toward widening entry to abortion companies.

“The letter concludes with a clear message: a positive response to My Voice, My Choice would save lives, reduce suffering, and translate EU values into concrete action,” acknowledged an MVMC marketing campaign press launch.

The European Fee will announce its resolution on the MVMC initiative on Feb. 25.

Based on the European Centre for Regulation and Justice (ECLJ), this might enable a French girl who’s between 14 and 22 weeks pregnant — exterior France’s authorized time restrict — to journey to the Netherlands for an abortion.

Abortions for youngsters recognized with Down syndrome are unlawful in Poland, however underneath the proposed guidelines, a Polish girl carrying an unborn baby with Down syndrome may journey to France for an abortion, with funding from the EU.

The ECLJ referred to as the plan “scandalous,” and Grégor Puppinck, director of the ECLJ, despatched a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Fee; Stéphane Séjourné, former French minister and vp of the fee; and the 25 different European commissioners, denouncing the technique and what he described as an infringement of state sovereignty on this situation.

“The commission’s assessment of the MVMC initiative concerns a proposal that would place Union financial instruments at the service of facilitating access to abortion, including through measures that risk circumventing national legislative frameworks adopted through democratic processes,” wrote Puppinck.

“Such an approach would involve using Union action to neutralize or bypass national law in an area of profound moral sensitivity that remains primarily within the responsibility of the member states.”

Based on Puppinck, pursuing this course would danger a lack of credibility with residents and member states against abortion.

“It would amount to instrumentalizing Union competences to override national policy choices through financial means and to achieve outcomes that national legislatures have deliberately chosen to regulate differently,” he added.

“The use of Union financial mechanisms in this manner would raise serious concerns regarding the commission’s neutrality and its commitment to sincere cooperation, and would further erode confidence in the equal and principled treatment of citizens’ initiatives in ideologically contested fields,” he stated.

Puppinck, writing on behalf of the ECLJ, outlined 5 the reason why the initiative ought to be rejected.

First, the bounds of EU competence and the precept of subsidiarity in issues regarding abortion.

Second, the absence of a acknowledged proper to abortion underneath European and worldwide human rights regulation.

Third, the institutional context and neutral evaluation wherein the MVMC initiative has been developed and promoted.

Fourth, the medical, psychological, and social implications of abortion for girls.

Fifth, consistency and procedural equity within the fee’s therapy of ideologically opposed European Residents’ Initiatives (ECIs), notably as compared with the Certainly one of Us initiative.
